VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CONGRATULATE MRS. DAISY CADLE MATTHEWS WASHINGTON, OF AIKEN COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH SIXTH BIRTHDAY, TO DECLARE FEBRUARY 22, 2008, DAISY CADLE MATTHEWS WASHINGTON DAY, AND TO WISH MRS. WASHINGTON MUCH HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN THE COMING YEAR.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are delighted to learn that Mrs. Daisy Cadle Matthews Washington celebrated her one hundred sixth birthday on January 13, 2008; and
Whereas, Mrs. Washington was born on January 13, 1902, in Windsor, just after the dawn of the twentieth century, and as that century and the beginnings of the twenty-first century have brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Washington has been there to witness nearly all of them; and
Whereas, wife of the late Oscar Matthews and mother to their two sons and daughter, this matriarch later married the late John Washington; and
Whereas, a lifelong resident of Aiken, the young Daisy attended historic Ocean Grove School. During her working years, Mrs. Washington was an employee of Schofield Instructional School, Aiken Hospital, Garden Tea Room next to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Mr. and Mrs. Goodyear, and Mr. and Mrs. Rogers at Rye Patch; and
Whereas, on Sunday, January 13, Mrs. Washington celebrated her one hundred sixth birthday at Hayden Baptist Church, later continuing the celebration with a party at Mattie C. Hall Nursing Home, where she currently resides; and
Whereas, her one birthday request was a drive past her former home, a wish that was gladly accommodated several times over; and
Whereas, according to state records, Daisy Washington is now the oldest resident of the State of South Carolina, possibly one of the twenty longest-lived centenarians living in the United States; and
Whereas, in recognition of such an exceptional birthday, the General Assembly wishes to honor Mrs. Washington on February 22, 2008, with a statewide day of commemoration to be called Daisy Cadle Matthews Washington Day; and
Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her one hundred sixth birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Daisy Cadle Matthews Washington, of Aiken County, on the occasion of her one hundred sixth birthday, declare February 22, 2008, Daisy Cadle Matthews Washington Day, and wish Mrs. Washington much health and happiness in the coming year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Daisy Cadle Matthews Washington.
