VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THE LIFE OF DE'ANDRE "DRE" ADAMS, WINTHROP UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL PLAYER, AND TO CELEBRATE THE LEGACY HE LEFT TO THE MANY PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES HE TOUCHED.
Whereas, born in Georgia on December 23, 1988, to Master Sergeant John Adams and the late Deborah Elaine Robinson Adams, De'Andre "Dre" Adams was raised with his two brothers, DeJon and De Omiaique by his loving grandmother, Louise Adams-Short; and
Whereas, in 2005, he graduated from South Cobb High School in Austell, Georgia, and played basketball with the same passion and enthusiasm with which he lived all of life; and
Whereas, in his two seasons playing with the Winthrop Eagles, Dre Adams became widely known to fans who loved his aggressive, energetic play as a feisty backup point guard full of fire; and
Whereas, blessed with a vibrant personality, Dre used every bit of his five feet and eight inches in height to the best advantage of his basketball team, and his long arms amassed thirty steals in his second season's thirty-five games with the Eagles; and
Whereas, because this twenty-year-old sophomore majoring in sociology spiced up the floor whenever he came in the games, his teammates nicknamed him "soy sauce," and even with limited playing time he earned the nickname of "Spectacula" with fans; and
Whereas, following his death due to a motor vehicle accident on May 16, 2007, during the legislative interim, the De'Andre Scholarship Fund, established in his honor to provide a scholarship for a men's basketball player, has reached the goal of twenty-five thousand dollars and continues to grow from the proceeds of a video commemorating his life; and
Whereas, to express his appreciation to Winthrop University for the kindness shown to his family members during their time of grieving, Master Sergeant John Adams, who redeployed to Iraq after Dre's funeral, sent the university a flag which had flown in Iraq during a combat mission there; and
Whereas, Winthrop University recently held a flag ceremony with this flag to communicate their profound sorrow over the loss of Dre Adams and to express sincere appreciation for his life and the contributions he made to the university in his time there; and
Whereas, that ceremony represents the same principles on which our country was originally founded, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, so that when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, which symbolizes the national motto, "In God We Trust"; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are desirous of remembering the life of this amazing young man and joining with his family, friends and the Winthrop community in honoring his memory. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and remember the life of De'Andre "Dre" Adams, Winthrop University basketball player, and celebrate the legacy he left to the many people whose lives he touched.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Master Sergeant John Adams and to Winthrop University President Anthony DiGiorgio.
