RECOGNIZING DEACON AMOS GILLIAM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF THE FLAT ROCK COMMUNITY IN GREENVILLE COUNTY, FLAT ROCK BAPTIST CHURCH, AND HIS COUNTRY.
Whereas, Deacon Amos Gilliam was born on January 18, 1923, the son of Richard and Idella Cureton Gilliam; and
Whereas, he grew up in Newberry County where he joined Vaughnville Baptist Church at age sixteen; and
Whereas, Deacon Gilliam moved to the Flat Rock Community in Greenville County in 1942; and
Whereas, he served for three years in the United States Army as an anti-tank gun crewman. His duties included: cleaning, oiling and making repairs to guns, becoming familiar with the use of rifles, carbines, pistols, trench knives, and hand grenades, and knowing the principles of first-aid care and the treatment of wounds; and
Whereas, during the course of his military service, Deacon Gilliam received numerous awards including the: APT Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received a "Heartfelt Thanks" letter from former President Harry S. Truman and was honorably discharged in 1946 from the United States Army; and
Whereas, he married Annie Lee Croft in 1946, and together they are the proud parents of seven children, doting grandparents, and great-grandparents; and
Whereas, Deacon Gilliam has taught Sunday School for approximately forty years, and currently serves as an alternate Sunday School teacher for class Number One at Flat Rock Baptist Church; and
Whereas, in 1959, he was installed as a Deacon at Flat Rock Baptist Church, has served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, and has performed his responsibilities as a Deacon unselfishly; and
Whereas, Deacon Gilliam remains active in his community by serving both as a Notary Public and a community plumber; and
Whereas, he is very active with both the elderly and youth groups in his community and is the founder of the John D. Hollingsworth fellowship; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the General Assembly to pause in its deliberations to recognize the contributions that this outstanding son of South Carolina has made to his community and our country. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Deacon Amos Gilliam for his many years of dedicated service to the citizens of the Flat Rock Community in Greenville County, Flat Rock Baptist Church, and his country.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Deacon Amos Gilliam.
