The House assembled at 10:00 a.m.
Deliberations were opened with prayer by Representative J. H. NEAL, as follows:

Our thought for today is from Psalm 15:1-2: "Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. "
Let us pray. Almighty Father, we call on You at this hour asking once again for Your blessings upon all who are gathered here. We are asking, Father, that You send Your ministering angels to be rounded about this place. We ask today, Father, that You send Your blessing upon this State and this Nation. We ask Your guiding hand in our deliberations as we, in this place, labor in this vineyard. We ask You to help us to walk justly. Help us, Father, to give mercy, and help us, Father, to seek righteousness, and now, Father, with all those things, we ask that you also give us compassion and wisdom. Let us all say Amen.

Pursuant to Rule 6.3, the House of Representatives was led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America by the SPEAKER.

HOUSE RESOLUTION

H. 3667 (Word version) -- Rep. McLeod: A HOUSE RESOLUTION TO COMMEND ALL THE CITIZENS OF NEWBERRY COUNTY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA WHO ARE PARTICIPATING

Printed Page 1574 . . . . . Thursday, March 5, 2009

IN THE "RELAY FOR LIFE FOR NEWBERRY COUNTY" TO BE HELD MAY 1-2, 2009, AND TO DECLARE MAY 1-2, 2009, AS NEWBERRY COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE WEEKEND.

Whereas, the Relay for Life for Newberry County will be held May 1-2, 2009, at the Newberry High School athletic stadium on Main Street in Newberry; and

Whereas, this year's Newberry County Relay for Life will kick off on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. with the opening ceremony and the Cancer Survivors' Victory Lap and close on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 7:00 a.m. with a Fight Back ceremony; and

Whereas, through the American Cancer Society, Newberry County Relay for Life has raised funds for cancer research, programs, and college scholarships, with the majority invested in the community through programs such as the Look Good Feel Better, the Road to Recovery, the Best Chance Network, transportation assistance, a stay at the Hope Lodge, a champion scholarship, and other support services; and

Whereas, the Newberry County Relay for Life Committee encourages the community to "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back" because approximately twenty thousand South Carolinians were diagnosed with cancer in 2008, and almost nine thousand South Carolina citizens died from this disease last year; and

Whereas, every year volunteers commit countless hours of their time to the Newberry County Relay for Life, and survivors and caregivers work tirelessly to raise awareness about cancer. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend all the citizens of Newberry County and the State of South Carolina who are participating in the "Relay for Life for Newberry County" to be held May 1-2, 2009, and declare May 1-2, 2009, as Newberry County Relay for Life weekend.
